XL185 progress...

 I re-welded the fork stop and ground down the welds.

 I removed all the unnecessary wires and this is what I have left.

This is the repaires exhaust back in place. I need to find a rear fender so I can start with the re-design of the rear section.

XL185 exhaust-ing progress...

When I got the XL the tailpipe was completely broken off the muffler. Being low on funds and wanting a challenge I decided to try and make my own.

 I cut a piece from an old CB500 exhaust I had in the shop and tacked it to the muffler.

 I then cut some sheet metal pieces to form around the pipe to attach to the muffler. This is basically how it was originally.

 I still have to do some finish welding and some final grinding but everything is solid and almost ready for painting. I guess not bad and the price was right. Just some time and recycled metal that I already had.

Hot off the Bench...

Butchering the XL185..

 This is a shot of the tailpiece before I cut if off. It was a welding disaster.

 This is after I chopped the frame rails. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it yet. I'm thinking of doing something different with the tank and seat and also fabbing up a custom exhaust.

 I cut off the helmet lock and smoothed it out.

I also had to straighten out the rear frame section. The left side was about an inch higher than the right side. Everything seems nice and straight now.

XL185 progress

I removed the airbox and exhaust or what was left of it. The tailpipe is broken off so I'm going to try my hand at fabricating a custom exhaust. I'm going to put an aftermarket air cleaner in place of the airbox. Will post more pics as progress continues.

RIP Jack Clement

Jack Clement passed away Thursday. He was a legend in Nashville and recently was a DJ on XM Radio on the Outlaw Country Channel. RIP Cowboy Jack Clement

Big Sid's Vincati...

Just finished this book on vacation. Defiinitely recommend it. It's not just for motorcycle fans either. Basically the story of a project that brought a father and son closer together. But interesting reading for motorcycle fans also because it talks about the Vincent and Ducati motorcycles used to build the bike. If  you act fast you can pick the book up in the bargain bins at Barnes and Noble.  On a sad note after reading the book I decided to look up Sid Biberman, the subject of the book. He just passed away in June 2013. So hurry and go get the book, very good reading.

41 Years Young...

My son took these pics of me at Slippery Rock Dunes yesterday. That's me on my 1975 XL350.  Two antiques hitting the dirt. I posted this to show that these old bikes can still be ridden and not hidden in the back of the garage.

XL185 under the knife...

Someone did some real crappy welding so I'm going to cut out all these bad parts and re-do them. Also have to make a tailpipe and do alot of cosmetic work to this beast.
